Canadian Style Brussels Sprouts! *organic ingredients if possible
-12 Brussels sprouts per person (this recipe\’s amount is for 2 people)
-1/2 cup of roughly chopped almonds, walnuts or pine nuts
-3 tbsp of Canadian Maple Syrup
-1 tsp of rice bran oil for cooking
-steamer
-frying pan
-salt and pepper to taste
Cleaning and steaming:
Start by cleaning your Brussels sprouts by taking off the first outer layers of leaves. When this is done, cut off the hard end, and cut the sprouts in half. Add them to the steamer, and steam until slightly tender (not able to poke a fork all the way in, just slightly). When this is done, take the sprouts out of the steamer for frying.
Frying:
Get the frying pan on the stove and heat over medium high heat. Add the rice bran oil and let heat for about 1 min. Add the maple syrup, and heat until it starts to bubble. Add the steamed Brussels sprouts cut side down into the maple syrup/oil mixture and let cook for 2 mins. Then stir the sprouts around so that they are entirely coated, cook for another 1 min. Add salt and pepper to taste (salt really contrasts the sweet of the syrup). Remove from heat, add chopped nuts over the top and serve.
I know a lot of people don\’t like these lil cabbages, but they are packed full of nutrients and sulforaphane, which is a chemical believed to have potent anticancer properties. This is a great way to jazz up this veggie Canadian style, and get everyone excited about Brussels sprouts! Kids will eat them too! Hope you enjoy this recipe. Be aware and eat with care 🙂
